The results of a small-scale program of neutron activation analysis of 69 ceramic fragments from the Minoan harbor town of Kommos are presented and critically evaluated. Prior to analysis, the vessels represented in the sample were thought to be imports from outside of Crete, manufactured either on Cyprus or in the Mycenaean cultural sphere. The chemical analyses support the identifications of the vessels as imports from the regions in question in roughly 80% of the cases. They further suggest that the vast majority of these ceramic imports were produced in a comparatively small number of production centers.

This section brings together two separate studies of Mycenaean pottery from the Menelaion and its vicinity. Although carried out at different times and under contrasting circumstances, they share one common, major aim of characterising chemically the locally-made pottery, the resulting data contributing to the broader effort on the part of the two laboratories concerned, the Fitch Laboratory and the Radiochemistry Laboratory at the University of Manchester, of defining the characteristics of pottery produced at the main centres of production in the Mycenaean world. The scope of the two studies should be explained at the outset: Part I presents the results of emission spectroscopy analysis of local LH IIIA–B fine wares and suspected imports from the excavations at the Menelaion, while the neutron activation analysis (NAA) programme in Part II investigated a wider range of the likely local fabrics, including cooking ware and ‘Barbarian’ ware, from the Menelaion as well as the North Hill and Profitis Elias. There was no overlap among the samples analysed in the two investigations, and clay prospection played only a very small part in the earlier of them. Pottery from the Menelaion of later date (Archaic and Black Glaze) analysed by both techniques will be reported separately.

Bill Newton died just a few days after submitting this for the special issue of Archaeometry, marking 50 years of NAA in archaeology. It was subsequently edited and expanded by John Prag and myself. I post it here firstly as a tribute to Bill, and secondly to provide an overview of the NAA work carried out by the Radiochemistry group at the University of Manchester from the early 1970s to the late 1990s.

Sixteen potsherds previously analyzed by neutron activation analysis (NAA) at Manchester were selected for analysis by NAA at Demokritos. The data for seventeen common elements were compared, and for each element a plot was produced of the data of one laboratory against that of the other. For most elements the agreement is very good and, for the exceptions, it was possible to make suggestions as to the reasons for the discrepancies. Finally, in order to allow direct comparison of pottery data from the two laboratories in provenance studies, a factor was calculated to convert Demokritos data to the Manchester standard for each element.

This research follows up on the spectrographic analyses of Mycenaean stirrup jars carried out initially at the Research Laboratory for Archaeology, University of Oxford, and more recently at the Fitch Laboratory, British School at Athens, using optical emission spectroscopy. These earlier studies suggest that many of the heavy ware stirrup jars excavated at Thebes, Mycenae and other mainland Greek sites may have their origins in west Crete, although there were difficulties in distinguishing between the chemical compositions of east and west Cretan pottery, and between central Cretan and Argolid pottery compositions.
Reference groups giving the range of elemental compositions characteristic of locally-produced material are essential prerequisites in the application of such data to ceramic provenance investigations. In the present work, chemical reference groups were obtained from the multivariate statistical analysis of neutron activation data on Minoan pottery from a number of Cretan sites. Comparison of jars found at the Houses of the Oil and Wine Merchants at Mycenae was then made with these Cretan control groups.
The results confirm the conclusions drawn by earlier studies, in that two thirds of the heavy ware jars found at Mycenae have a chemical profile consistent with that of west Cretan pottery. However, because of the similarities between Argolid and central Cretan chemical profiles, it is still not possible to draw any definite conclusions as to the origins of the remainder of these Mycenae jars.
